What Trace does with your data

Trace captures screenshots, annotations, and report content, and processes all of that content locally, inside your browser. There is no backend server that stores or receives your screenshots, annotations, or PDF reports — none of your captured content is ever transmitted anywhere.

Separately, Trace sends a small set of anonymous usage events (see "Analytics" below) to help us understand how the extension is used. These events do not include your screenshots, annotations, report content, or any personal information.

Local storage only

Screenshots, annotations, and in-progress reports are stored using your browser's local storage (chrome.storage / IndexedDB), scoped to your device. Uninstalling the extension or clearing site data removes this data. Trace has no cloud sync and no remote database for your content.

No account required

Trace does not require sign-up, sign-in, or any personal information to use. There are no user accounts on our end.

Analytics

Trace uses Google Analytics 4 (via the GA4 Measurement Protocol) to collect anonymous, aggregate usage data — for example, which features are used and how often, to help us improve the extension.

• Analytics events do not include screenshots, annotations, report content, file names, or page content from tabs you capture.
• Analytics events are not tied to your name, email, or any account, because Trace has no accounts.
• This data is used only to understand feature usage and improve Trace. It is not sold or shared with third parties beyond Google's processing of the data as our analytics provider.

If we change what we collect, or add tracking of any kind beyond this, this policy will be updated first.

Permissions

Trace requests only the Chrome extension permissions needed to:

• Capture the active tab (for screenshots)
• Render the popup and editor UI
• Generate the PDF report locally
• Send anonymous usage analytics events (see above)

These permissions are used solely to provide that functionality and are not used to access, collect, or transmit your browsing history, page content, or personal data.

This website uses Vercel Web Analytics to measure page views. Vercel Analytics is cookieless — it does not set any cookies, does not collect personal information, and does not track individual visitors across sessions or sites. No consent banner is required because no personal data is processed.

Changes to this policy

If Trace's data handling changes — for example, if an optional cloud feature is introduced in the future — this page will be updated before that feature ships, and any new data handling will be opt-in.
